Market Garden
Agricultural products grown in the Willamette Valley are showcased in
the Silverton Market Garden. Many of the 147 Oregon crops are
represented, including berries, grapes, other fruits, grass seed, hops
and assorted vegetables. A rill filled with water runs through the
center of this garden and ends in a small waterfall, symbolizing nearby
Silver Falls. As a connection to the nearby
Children’s Garden, there are
a series of raised vegetable beds and a working, old-fashioned water
pump where visitors are encouraged to do some hands-on gardening.
Produce from this garden is donated to families in need; in 2008, more
than 7,000 pounds of produce was harvested from the Market Garden.

Green Guide Stop number twelve
Silverton Market Garden
The Silverton Market Garden uses a range of different
methods to improve soil fertility
without using chemicals, including companion planting, raised beds and
generous mulching.
Organic fertilizers we apply include bone meal, fish meal, blood and
feather meal, and ground
mineral dust. The garden also uses local dairy manure on the raised beds
and local hazelnut
husks as mulch. These husks are great for slug control.
