DUTIES:
Job Title- Visitor Center Manager
Reports to: General Manager
Department: The Oregon Garden – Visitor Center

Positions Overview:
Responsible for the management and operation of the Gift Shop, Garden admissions and Membership program. Manages budget, staffing and programming to ensure profitability. Responsible for identifying and selling Garden memberships to prospective businesses, organizations and individuals, developing and managing Member benefit program.

Essential Functions:
1. Oversee the hiring, management and scheduling of paid and volunteer staff. Provide training on all gift shop, admissions and Membership sales functions to VC staff.
2. Create sales training and incentive programs for VC, Café and tram staff to maximize admission, retail and membership sales.
3. Responsible for the appropriate selection and purchasing of retail products to maximize profitability.
4. Manage retail inventory system, including a monthly and annual inventory accounting.
5. Responsible for the overall appearance of the gift shop, ensuring attractive and organized display of product, and overseeing the daily janitorial needs of the gift shop.
6. Solicit Membership prospects through outside sales calls, group presentations, event participation and networking. Develop program for VC staff to sell memberships in the VC.
7. Work with GM to set and achieve monthly sales goals for retail and membership sales.
8. Solicit vendor partners for reciprocal member benefits, including nurseries, merchants and area attractions.
9. Develop and implement delivery methods for member benefits.
10. Maintain accurate, legible records and files for VC and members.
11. Responsible for accurate balancing of daily receipts.
12. Assist in promoting group tour program for the Garden. Assist with group registration process, ensuring exceptional customer service is achieved.
13. Perform opening and closing duties of the Visitor Center.
14. Work closely with Café Coordinator and Group Tour coordinator to be sure all programs are working in concert.
15. Represent the VC and Member programs at trade shows and Garden events.
16. Hours vary based on season, including nights and weekends. Flexible schedule is required.
17. Other duties as assigned by the Guest Service Manager and/or General Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2. Gardener/ Nursery Supervisor Position Overview:
This is a combined position responsible for the propagation and production of plants used in the garden and retail center, as well as managing several specific garden zones. Oversees and participates in the activities and duties of seasonal staff, community service workers, and volunteers as necessary. The position will also require some basic knowledge of irrigation systems and the ability to make simple repairs. The application of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and other products used in the maintenance and development of the Garden is also required.

Supervision Received:
Position is supervised by the Horticulture Manager.

Essential Functions:
1. Under supervision, will take responsibility for designated “Areas” of The Oregon Garden, striving for high quality gardening maintenance and development of various established landscaped gardens and/or new garden sites.
a. Maintains & beautifies gardens and other landscape features to a high standard.
b. Effectively supervises assigned staff, community service workers, volunteers, and others.
c. Plants and cultivates annual flowers, perennials, bulbs, groundcovers, shrubs, trees, etc.
d. Carries out weeding, raking, ditching, digging, mulching, composting, mowing etc.
e. Prepares soil and applies fertilizers.
f. Keeps paths, trails and clean and safe.
g. Prunes various plants as needed; deadhead flowers.
h. Helps install, repair and maintain irrigation systems.
i. Safely and efficiently sprays for control of weeds, pests and diseases; practice IPM methods.
j. After suitable training, demonstrates safe and proper use of all standard horticultural machinery and equipment.
k. Mows grass, edges lawns, and operates other lawn-maintenance machinery as requested.
l. Undertakes small construction projects, including, but not limited to drainage, edging, pathways, beds, retaining walls, and trails.

2. Works with fellow horticultural staff members in other “Areas” as needed.

3. Assists with managing the seasonal staff and volunteers as necessary for the department, to ensure the overall maintenance of the Garden is at the desired optimum level for garden visitors.

4. Maintains an ongoing work record of gardening progress for the department, as directed by supervisors, so that proper documentation can be produced when necessary. This will help evaluate the maintenance practices in existing gardens, as well as develop future gardens.

5. Serves as representative for The Oregon Garden at various industry events and OAN functions as deemed necessary by the Horticulture Manager and General Manager.

6. Serves as a spokesperson for The Oregon Garden when necessary and represents the Garden in a professional and polite manner to all visitors and industry representatives.

7. Greets guests professionally and responds to their needs with a focus on ensuring a quality guest experience. Will also assist with Garden tours as necessary to meet the demand of the groups.

8. Assists as needed in Garden-related events to ensure the success of the event and a positive experience for Garden visitors.

9. Assists with new construction projects to ensure the desired result is achieved.

10. Assists in managing community service workers, AmeriCorps personnel, and other state and federally funded work programs as necessary

11. Conduct various nursery facility operations including but not limited to irrigation, pruning, potting, cleaning, organizing, labeling, and record keeping.

12. Monitor and carry out maintenance and operations of greenhouse and specialized nursery structures.

13. Conduct daily survey of both manual and automatic greenhouse irrigation needs and maintain, repair, or adjust systems if needed.

14. Monitor plant growth and health and report to Horticulture Manager as needed.

15. Carry out the day-to-day maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records on plants propagated, current nursery stock inventory, and seed storage inventory.

16. Plan and realize nursery infrastructure and operations in preparation for additional greenhouse and nursery space.

17. Carry out the collection, cleaning, packaging and storage of seed, utilizing a variety of methods for collecting and cleaning seed.

18. Plan and organize plant propagation from cutting, division, and seed.
19. Provide horticultural training for volunteer plant propagators and nursery employees. Provide work lists, supervise activities and coordinate work. Provide leadership, direction and horticultural instruction to volunteer team.

20. Will assist in other duties as assigned by Horticulture Manager or General Manager.

Essential Duties:
1. Knowledge of a wide range of ornamental plants suitable for Oregon’s Willamette Valley including natives.
2. Ability to identify plants including the use of Latin names.
3. Knowledge of nursery operations and management.
4. Knowledge with the methods and principles behind container nursery operations.
5. Supervisory skills to lead and inspire a diverse work force of student employees, interns and volunteers; to participate in a horticultural training program for volunteers, interns and the general public; to provide leadership to nursery volunteers; and to work as a part of a team and manage teams.
6. Skill in plant propagation techniques and horticultural methods.
7. Knowledge of Computer programs to use for record keeping and tag printing.
8. Skills using pesticides and supervise and train others in the use of pesticides.
9. Knowledge of basic irrigation methods, principles and skills to maintain and adjust irrigation systems.
10. Interpersonal, customer service and communication skills to communicate clearly and interact effectively with staff, volunteers, and the general public; promote principles of customer service in the work place.
11. Excellent organizational skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to speak read and write English including effective written and verbal communication skills. (Second language a positive attribute)
2. Ability to demonstrate excellent customer service to provide the Garden guest information as necessary.
3. Computer skills including database management, use of Internet and e-mail applications, MS Access, MS Outlook and MS Word.
4. Experience with budgets and basic accounting principles.
5. Effectively communicate policy and mediate disputes in a professional manner.
6. Prioritize work, meet time deadlines, and maintain reliable work attendance.
7. Ability to learn technical operation of equipment.
8. Exceptional people skills to serve as “ambassador” for the Garden.
9. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis.
10. Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to operate the Garden’s vehicles and equipment.

Experience and Training:
Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field, and minimum four years in a related horticulture field, or a combination of experience and education, which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability to perform the job. Must be able to secure and maintain a pesticide applicator's license within one year of hire.

4. Trolley Drivers

Position Overview: Drives the Oregon Garden Tram and provides narration as part of the guest experience. Assists guests with loading and unloading and responds to guests' questions and requests.

Essential Functions:

1. Drives the regularly scheduled tram shuttle service around the garden. Tram driver will use a specific script to provide an overview of Garden amenities and recommended visitor stops.

2. Is responsive to the visitors needs, especially the disabled and elderly.

3. Directs visitors and answer questions, serving as an ambassador for the Garden.

4. Monitors and controls guest activities in a professional manner to ensure guest safety and compliance with the established Oregon Garden policies and procedures.

5. Other duties as assigned by the Guest Service Manager and/or Manager on Duty, including but not limited to garden groomer, parking attendant, security, event support and ticket attendant.

6. Limited maintenance, maintain cleanliness of tram as well as keeping tram fueled.

7. Provides accurate, current, and professionally worded information to guests about Garden events, amenities, membership options, and current sights to be seen in the Garden, as well as items available in the Garden Café and the Gift Shop.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

1. Previous experience in a customer service oriented field.

2. Previous experience in and effective skill set for public speaking.

3. Ability to communicate positively and effectively with Garden guests, co-workers and volunteers.

4. Professional demeanor and appearance

5. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English. Knowledge of a foreign language is a plus.

6. Must be at least 18 years of age, have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license. Safety and operational training will be provided and required.

7. Must be able to walk, stand and perform physical activities for a long period of time.

8. Must be available to work irregular shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

9. Basic First Aid and CPR training or experience preferred.

1.Promote and sell Garden merchandise, promotions, and memberships to guests. Must be able to correctly handle financial transactions and associated equipment such as computers, credit card sales machines, and cash registers.

2. Maintain active knowledge of inventory in Gift shop and Garden Café. Actively assist guests with making merchandise selections and answer questions about items.

3. As directed, assist with stocking merchandise and with keeping all work and display areas clean and orderly.

4. Provide accurate, clear, and current information to guests about the Garden, activities, events and other services and amenities available at the Resort and in the Silverton community.

5. Communicate with guests effectively and courteously.

Oregon Garden Internship Program
The program is open to current college students interested in horticulture and recent graduates with a horticulture degree or related field. Internships are available all four quarters.
