INFORMATION



Program Cost:
The Oregon Garden and OFRI may be able to cover the program cost, admission to the Garden and transportation costs. Participants must submit a request form and an additional transportation reimbursement form. After a review of applications, participants will be contacted with details of their trip.

Lesson Descriptions:
The grade ranges listed with each lesson are suggestions based on previous experience. If a lesson sounds suited to your needs but is out of your grade range, just let us know, we frequently add or adjust lessons to meet individual classroom needs. Additionally, if you have a forestry topic that you would like to cover but don’t see it listed we may be able to accommodate the request. The education staff has experience and knowledge in natural resources and education, they reserve the right to modify programs based on availability and appropriateness.

Tree Identification
Grades: 3-12
Become a tree expert! Learn how to identify broad leaved and/or coniferous trees using a dichotomous key and then DO IT! Discover along the way the many fascinating uses for trees and their importance to wildlife and all living things. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Wildlife Habitat
Grades: K-8
Hear and see the excitement as students ramble through the Rediscovery Forest finding insects, frogs and other forest critters. Learn what habitat is and study how living things depend on the forest for their diverse habitat needs. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Forest Ecology
Grades: 5-12
Learn about forest layers and how forest structure influences the relationship between living and nonliving parts of the forest. Students will use forestry tools. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Animal Tracking
Grades: 3-8
Practice the art and science of animal tracking. Use track molds, animal sign and other visual aids to get up to speed on “animal detective techniques” and then venture into the Forest and Garden to find the real thing. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Rediscovery Forest Tour
Grades: K-12
Explore this ten-acre demonstration forest and learn about tree growth, forest development, forest products, wildlife, the role of management in maintaining forest health and other important values associated with Oregon’s sustainable forests. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Tree Treasure Hunt
Grades: K-6
Deciduous conifers? Yes! Explore the wonder of tress in our Conifer Garden in the Rediscovery Forest and throughout the Oregon Garden. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Forest Management
Grades: 9-12
Use the tools of forestry and see how the information they provide can be used to make forestry decisions. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Forest and Wetland Food Chains
Grades: K-12
Using interactive games and activities learn about the food relationships between forest plants, herbivores, carnivores and decomposers. Compare forest food chains with wetland food chains by sorting through goop gathered from the Oregon Garden Wetlands and identifying the variety of organisms that call the Garden’s unique wetlands home. Role of Fire in Oregon Forests
Grades: 9-12
Investigate the historic role of fire in Oregon’s East and West side forests, the factors that influenced fire then and now, and how forest managers are attempting to understand and manage this ongoing situation. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Seeds All Around
Be a vector. A vector? Yes, learn how seeds are dispersed by imitating the many dispersal strategies seeds employ. Learn what conditions are necessary for germination and growth. Sustainable Forestry
Grades: 6-12

Oregon Forest Practices Act
Grades: 6-12
Learn hands-on about the laws and practices that govern forestry activities on state and private lands in Oregon. Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Nature Journaling
Grades: 2-12
Use the Garden’s unique natural setting to inspire young writers and teach the skills of observation. We incorporate journaling into many of our lessons. Just ask! Registration Form. Transportation Reimbursement Form.

Service Learning Opportunities
Grades: K-12
